5 FORM AND ORGANIZATION Because the object represented in this pattern is shown in white and rotated 90 degrees counterclockwise, it is unlikely to be spontaneously perceived and recognized. When we look at the illustration to the left, we initially tend to see a pattern of unfamiliar dark fragments. At most, the detail in the outlines may suggest a map of an unrecognizable region. In fact, the outline of much of Europe is present in the illustration, although even with that hint it may not be detected. To see Europe’s outline, the illustration must be rotated 90 degrees clockwise and the central white region rather than the black fragments must become the primary object of awareness.
